Teachers - FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

When does tutoring start?

The Writing Centers will begin to accept requests for tutoring during the third week of the semester. Students must go to the Writing Center of their choice to sign up for tutoring; we do not accept applications over the phone or through email.

Is tutoring free?

Yes.

Do I need to do anything to get a student signed up for tutoring?

No. Students will need to provide your name, and the number and section of your class. There are no forms for you to fill out.

Can I require that certain students be tutored?

No. However, you may strongly encourage them. Tell them that even strong writers usually find that participating in tutoring helps their work.

Can I send a student from a course other than a Writing Program course?

Yes, but most spaces are reserved for students in Writing Program courses. Enrollment of students in other courses requires the permission of the Writing Center Director.

Can students just drop in for tutoring on a single assignment?

No. The Writing Center offers developmental assistance in writing and reading, rather than editing advice for single assignments. Students must sign up for a series of five sessions with a tutor, and they will be expected not to miss their sessions. You can read more about our scheduling policy here.

If I have a student in tutoring, is it possible for me to communicate with his/her tutor?

Yes. You will be notified when one of your students signs up for tutoring. After the third tutoring session, you will receive an update from the Writing Center, and are welcome to communicate with the tutor regarding the student’s progress. Contact our Desk Manager at 932-8856 if you require more information.

Do writing centers offer more than tutoring?

Tutoring is the main service of the Writing Center, but we also have long-term goals involving workshops, lecture services, and better communication tools for teachers and students. Check our website for future announcements, or contact the Center if you’d like to get involved.
